Internships
November 2006

Featherstone Farm employs a number of entry level farm workers each season. While the arrangement is not a formal internship (whereby the farm offers a teaching program and participation in every aspect of the farm’s operation in exchange for a stipend), these positions provide plenty of broad experience and learning opportunity through hands-on engagement.

Applicants for these positions generally come with some related experience (gardening or landscaping, cooking or food service or outdoor environmental work) that prepares them for a season of working hard in the sun. It is not necessary to have any farm background, but experience working closely with others co-operatively is important. Applicants must be self motivated workers with a commitment to organic agriculture.

Entry level farmworkers typically work 40-50 hrs/week, in the greenhouse, transplanting, picking and packing produce, and in various aspects of the CSA program. They occasionally work with machinery, though operating experience is not required. Every effort will be made to give new farmworkers more hands on experience in areas of special interest.

Compensation for entry level work is based on prior experience, and includes housing on the farm, produce, an hourly wage and profit share. A minimum 3 month commitment is required, though a full season (April-October) is preferred.

Applicants for these positions should submit a work history, three references, and letter describing why they want to work on an organic vegetable farm, and what relevant experience / skills they bring with them.
