Jack

Jack’s first farm job was on a small CSA farm in Williamstown, Massachusetts in 1988. After years of apprenticeships and related vegetable work (from PA to CA), he and Jenni were founding members of the Zephyr Valley Community, and moved to the farm in 1995 with the goal of starting a vegetable business.

Growing up in Red Wing and suburban Louisville, KY, Jack had no background in farming. He became interested in rural development and agriculture while studying in Sweden and traveling in India and Peru. After graduating from Yale University with a degree in Anthropology, Jack took a farm job in the hopes of acquiring concrete skills to use in overseas fieldwork. He fell in love with the vegetables themselves, and has never looked back.

Nowadays Jack is involved in field planning and preparation, planting and cultivating and wholesale development at Featherstone. “Organic agriculture is the most life affirming work I have ever undertaken” he says. “It’s completely engaging for the mind, hands and heart.” Jack and Jenni live with their two sons, Emmet and Oscar, in a home overlooking the vegetable fields.
