It has been a WET Spring!

This spring has brought us much-needed rain, signaling the end of a multi-year drought in Minnesota. While this is excellent news for our lakes and rivers, it presents challenges for our farm operations. Abby Benson, our farm manager, shares insights into what this wet season means for our produce and our CSA members.

For our CSA members—our valued community who have pre-purchased their shares—rest assured that filling your boxes with our harvest remains our top priority. In the face of weather-related setbacks, we prioritize our CSA commitments over wholesale orders to ensure you receive your shares as planned.

Navigating a wet spring in the upper Midwest means adjusting our farming practices to the weather’s whims. Despite the challenges, we’ve largely adhered to our planting schedule. Harvesting winter cover crops has proven particularly demanding, as prolonged moisture complicates their integration into the soil.

Our greenhouses are bustling with activity, housing eager waves of cabbage and cilantro starts awaiting their transition to the fields. Summer crops rely heavily on our in-field planting, supplemented by our strategically deployed plastic beds that safeguard against excess water and preserve soil integrity.

The team remains vigilant against potential foliar diseases exacerbated by damp conditions, though we’re pleased to report healthy plant conditions thus far. Special attention is directed towards sensitive crops like tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers, while safeguarding against black rot in our brassicas.

Even amidst rain (barring lightning), our dedicated team, led by Nathan and our warehouse staff, perseveres in cleaning and packing your produce with care. If you spot a bit of mud on your veggies, know that we’ve minimized handling to maintain freshness for your enjoyment.

We extend our gratitude to our adaptable and skilled crew, including our invaluable visa workers, whose dedication ensures we meet nature’s demands, even if it means working nights and weekends.

Thank you for your continued support of Featherstone Farm. Here’s to a successful growing season ahead!
